We've been talking about a Galaxy Quest sequel forever. But maybe, just maybe, the time is right, and the writer allegedly has an idea. Plus, what was in the Rated-R version we never saw?
Jordan Hoffman has created an impressive oral history of Galaxy Quest over at MTV. Screenwriter Robert Gordon, Director Dean Parisot, and Galaxy Quest crew members Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Justin Long were all tapped for stories including what was in the original R-Rated script:
Robert Gordon: There's talk about the so-called R-rated version of the film. When I originally wrote it, I wasn't thinking about a family film, just what I wanted to see. So when the ship lands in the convention hall in the original draft it decapitates a bunch of people. There was also stuff we shot where Sigourney tries to seduce some of the aliens. It was cut – and that's why her shirt is ripped at the end. Also the worst dubbed "F-bomb" ever. Good for Dean for never shooting coverage on that.
And (of course) there was much talk of a potential sequel. Just last yeaproducer Mark Johnson vowed that "it's not over" and gave a collection of vague quotes about the possibility of a TV series spinoff or another film.
And now we have (a few more details): All of the cast members tapped for this history expressed great interest in making another film. Sam Rockwell, Sigourney Weaver, Justin Long all agreed there's interest for a sequel, Tim Allen even hinted that there's a sequel written "somewhere." But the producer Johnson warned that they wouldn't want to make it without screenwriter Bob Gordon, ahich feels honest. Thankfully Gordon has an idea, but he's not saying what.
Gordon: On the record, I definitely have ideas for a sequel. Off the record, Okay, turn your recorder off.
