Roland Emmerich’s latest film hasn’t even been in theaters a day and he’s already got a follow-up. It’s not a third Independence Day film, though; it’s called Moonfall.

Moonfall is “best described as Emmerich’s 2012 mashed together with Close Encounters of the Third Kind, following an unlikely band of misfits who must unite to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit and hurtles towards earth” according to Deadline. If that sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because two weeks ago, we ran news of the film as one of the next big alien invasion movies.

But then it was merely a potential movie; now Universal Pictures bought the rights to the film, which was co-written by Emmerich, Harald Kloser, and Spencer Cohen, and are reportedly putting it on a fast track. This seems like an odd thing to announce on the same day Emmerich’s latest scifi film opened to harsh reviews, but presumably someone at Universal has a plan.
